Owner's supplies

With each new V ictor or V ictrola, the company supplied a number of items. First and foremost was a set of instructions.

Instruction Booklets

Each new V ictor or V ictrola was supplied with printed operating instructions. Up until about 1924, V ictor printed a unique card or booklet for each model. This became unwieldy in the mid twenties, as the company had a great many different models. At this time, they started to supply a generic instruction booklet that applied to all models. There were separate booklets for spring motor machines and electric motor machines, and the practice was continued when the O rthophonic V ictrolas were introduced. To make an instruction booklet for your V ictrola, click on the picture of the desired booklet. This will download a pdf file to your computer that can be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader (see link below to get your free copy). To print the booklet, first print only the even numbered pages. Next, return the printed pages to your print tray to print the opposite side, and print the odd numbered pages (the exact operation will vary between various printer types). Fold the pages in half, assemble into a booklet, staple in the center, and you will have a new instruction booklet for your V ictrola. This booklet is slightly larger than the original booklet in order to eliminate the need to trim the pages, however the content is faithfully reproduced. The original booklets were printed on a coated (semi-glossy) paper.

By clicking on the appropriate link below, you will be able to download a template that will enable you to print a copy of the instructions to accompany your instrument.

Needle Envelopes

With each new instrument, V ictor also supplied samples of needles. The package provided varied over time, but clicking on the photos of the original packages below will download templates enabling you to print accurate facsimiles of the paper needle packages used by V ictor in the 1920s.

Value Trends

Starting in 2008 the values of many collectibles declined. Talking machine prices were similarly depressed. The common models at auction have seen an overall reduction in value, perhaps in the range of 50%. Even scarce finishes such as Vernis-Martin or Circassian Walnut saw a reduction in value, although perhaps not to the level seen by the common models. Very scarce models tended to hold up since these were the types of machines that a collector might not have an opportunity to purchase again for many years, if ever. Attendance at phonograph shows seemed to remain strong during the summers of 2009-2011, and many machines were seen trading hands, although pricing was down, as noted.
