Victor Automatic Orthophonic Victrola Number 10-50 The Automatic Orthophonic was a remarkable instrument when first introduced in 1927. While it was not technically the first automatic phonograph available for the home, it was the first from a major company, and the first such instrument which most consumers saw. Victor advertised the new instrument with the slogan "Don't Get Up - It Changes Its Own Records!". For most people, this was a revolutionary concept, and a most impressive machine. It was priced at $600 when introduced. This was the price of two new Ford automobiles, and clearly not a machine for the masses. In spite of the high price, this was a popular and successful model for Victor. Some jobbers even added windows and coin slots so the machine could be used as a jukebox. |
