Capehart 400 series Chippendale This 1941 model year Capehart 400 is one of the larger instruments with the famous Turn-Over record changer. The 400 series of Capeharts were introduced in 1931, and were the instruments responsible for the Capehart reputation in the 1930s and 1940s. At this time, the Capehart was the instrument of choice in the finer, more stylish homes of the day. Many new homes were designed with built-in Capehart changers and amps and speakers throughout the house. Only about fifteen different cabinet styles were offered during the eighteen year run of the 400 series. In any given year, three to five cabinet styles would be offered. The electronics were always kept up-to-date, in spite of the imposed timelessness of the cabinets. This cabinet is typical of the various styles in the 400 series. The lid on the left 2/3 of the top permits access to the turntable. This cabinet style had an additional front door which allowed access to the turntable from the front. The famous Capehart changer shown is the first design, used from 1931 until the war. A redesigned changer debuted after the war. This instrument cost approximately $1200 new. |
